What is Gelatin made of?
Gelatin is a protein obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones with water. It is usually obtained from cows or pigs. Gelatin is used in shampoos, face masks, and other cosmetics; as a thickener for fruit gelatins and puddings (such as Jell-O); in candies, marshmallows, cakes, ice cream, and yogurts; on photographic film; and in vitamins as a coating and as capsules, and it is sometimes used to assist in “clearing” wines. Gelatin is not vegan. However, there is a product called “agar agar” that is sometimes marketed as “gelatin,” but it is vegan. It is derived from a type of seaweed.
Is Gelatin vegetarian/vegan?
Gelatin is an odorless, yellowish, and almost flavorless substance that is made by prolonged boiling of bones, skin and cartilage from animals. It's mostly made from the stuff that meat industries have left over for example pork skins, cattle and animal bones, horns etc.
Gelatin contains 18 amino acids, hence it contains lots of nutritional benefits. But if you are vegetarian/ vegan, you have to skip the products like Jell-O, chewy candies, jams, jellies as it's also made with gelatin. This animal-derived element can also be found in some medicines, vitamins and marshmallows (including Peeps), cheeses, soups, fruit snacks, salad dressings and canned hams and yogurts.
