Earwax is a natural substance produced by glands in the ear canals that protects our ears from bacteria and external agents while performing as a lubricant for the ear and ear canal. But, excess build up of earwax may cause discomfort, itching, ear infection, irritation, fullness or plugged sensation, dizziness, earache and even temporary partial hearing loss. Deficiency of omega-3 fatty acids, magnesium and zinc can also generate more earwax.
Ear wax can be easily cleaned and removed at home by trying following natural remedies. You may need to repeat these remedies several times depending on the amount of the wax buildup.
Remember this
1. Use slightly warm oil. Never drop hot oilor any hot mixture inside the ears, because it may burn the skin inside the ear and/or ear drum. It will lead to ear infection and inner injury.
2. Carefully use cotton and ear buds to clean the ear canals.
3. Avoid cleaning your ears too hard and too often.
4. Never flush cold water to drain out the earwax, as it may cause dizziness. Use only warm or normal water.
1. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil contains medium fatty acid that acts like sebum. It helps to remove hardened wax inside the ear. It also contain anti microbial properties, which prevents infections in the ear and also kills microorganisms that causes wax buildup in the ear canals.
1. Simply put few warm drops of organic coconut oil in the affected ear for 5-10 minutes.
2. Then tilt your head at the opposite direction to drain out the wax.
3. Finally, clean your earwax with a soft cloth or ear buds.
2. Sesame oil
Here is another excellent way to remove and prevent the buildup of earwax.
1. Put 3-4 drops of warm sesame oil in the affected ear before going to bed.
2. Place clean cotton ball and leave it overnight or for 10 minutes.
3. The earwax will rise up toward the ear canal’s surface.
4. Clean it out in the morning with a clean dry cotton swab.
3. Salt Water
Salt water will soften the wax build up inside the ear and make it easy to get out of.
1. Mix one tablespoon of good quality salt in half cup of clean warm water, stir it until the salt dissolves completely.
2. Soak a clean cotton ball in this salty water.
3. Incline the affected ear up toward the sky and squeeze this cotton ball to put 2-4 drops of the mixture into the ear.
4. Stay in the similar position for 4-5 minutes.
5. Then decline the affected ear in the opposite direction to let the salt water to drain out.
6. Finally, clean the outer and inner part of the ear with a clean cloth/cotton or ear bud to remove the wax.
4. Garlic Oil
Garlic contains ‘allicin’, which prevents infection in the ear and anti microbial agents present in garlic works as antibiotics.
1. Crush 1-2 garlic cloves and heat them in one-two tablespoon of coconut oil or mustard oil for 2-3 minutes on low flame.
2. Strain the oil and allow it to warm.
3. Incline your ear towards sky and put few drops of this slightly warm oil in the affected ear using dropper.
4. Allow the oil to settle for 5-10 minutes so that the earwax becomes soft.
5. Tilt your ear towards the ground and remove the excess oil and wax with cotton cloth or ear buds.
5. Hydrogen Peroxide
Hydrogen peroxide has effervescent property that can easily remove the earwax and other trash from the ear.
1. Mix 3-4 drops of hydrogen peroxide with 2-3 drops of clean water.
2. Incline the affected ear up toward the sky and put few drops of this mixture into the ear using ear dropper.
3. Leave it for 4-5 minutes and then tilt your affected ear towards the ground side to drain out the mixture.
4. Remove the wax using cotton cloth or ear buds.
6. Mustard oil
1. Slightly warm some mustard oil.
2. Using a clean dropper, put 3-4 drops of warm mustard oil into the affected ear.
3. Allow it to settle for 5-10 minutes so that the earwax becomes soft.
4. Tilt your ear towards the ground and remove the mustard oil and wax with cotton cloth or ear buds.
7. Baby Oil
1. Put 3-5 drops of good quality baby oil in affected ear using ear dropper.
2. Place a clean cotton ball at the entrance of the ear to prevent baby oil from oozing out. And leave it for 5-10 minutes.
3. Remove the cotton and tilt your ear towards the ground side to drain out the extra baby oil from ear.
4. Finally, clean your ear with a soft cotton cloth or ear buds.
Note: You can also use mineral oil instead of baby oil.
